An Attorney for President Trump said, “there is not an investigation of the president of the United States, period.”
Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump’s legal team, was responding to reports of an obstruction of Justice inquiry into Trump by the Justice Department following the firing of FBI Director James Comey.
“Let me be clear here,” Sekulow said on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” “The president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction.”
Last week there were multiple reports that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election had expanded into whether Trump had obstructed justice by firing Comey.
Sekulow said a tweet by President Trump referring to the investigation should not be seen as a confirmation of the investigation.
“The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to the Washington Post,” he said.
“He’s not afraid of the investigation — there is no investigation,” Sekulow added. “There has been no notification from the special counsel’s office that the president is under investigation.”
