Did Romney Pay Zero Percent in Taxes in 2008 and 2009?

Did Mitt Romney pay zero percent in taxes in 2008 and 2009? There's a rumble out there that Romney took such serious losses when the economy tanked in 2008 and 2009 that he was able to write off an amount equivalent to his tax burden, effectively paying zero percent in taxes despite his estimated net worth of 250-million. We'll never know unless Mitt Romney releases his tax returns. Eugene Robinson and David Cay Johnston join Ed to discuss it.

What does he not want people to see? Well, we are going to speculate. Maybe his companies are in involved in the shadowy vulture funds.

Legal, but despicable.

It doesn't matter what he paid in taxes.

We just need to keep hammering home the talking point - that he paid zero taxes for 10 years.

Like Harry Reid said - it's up to him to proof that statement wrong.

Righties have been using this tactic for decades.

Payback is a bitch.

Rush & Trump are out in the media saying Romney should show his tax returns if Obama will show his College transcripts.............so do you really think Mitt would do it?............the media might want to ask him??

Did Mitt Romney actually get richer by doing his taxes????

How many Moe the Millionaires or Bob the Billionaires who use the same accounting model that Mitt Romney uses pay zero in Federal & State income taxes in 2008 & 2009? Its not rocket science to logically figure it out..................How many actually came out ahead when it tax time & actually profited by doing their taxes.............the Righties like to coin this as negative taxes..................

Mitt Romney hides his money in foreign bank accounts for one reason & one reason only & that reason is to pay zero in Federal & State Income taxes.

We need a Joe the Plumber or Moe the Millionaire, Bob the Billionaire or Joe the Job Creator to show how & why people "androids" like Mitt keep their money abroad to avoid paying taxes...........its the same accounting model...................a Moe the Millionaire could keep Mitt on Defense through November................and Joe the so called Job Creator can show how this all tie this all ties into economic disaster for creating American Jobs.

If the romney campain wants this to go away all they have to do is show the tax returns. I like most other people had to show 3 years of returns, proof of income, and debt to get a home loan, and in some cases to get a car or personal loan. So if romney wants to be president then he should show the American people his returns. Romney is either hiding that he paid little to nothing or is hiding more money than he is saying is in the so called blind trust.

The companies and wealthy dont give a check to the people in congress, but they do by their campain donations as we see now in the wake of citizens united. These people who pass tax laws know if they dont kiss the fannies of these poeple the money they get will go to the other guy. Also the tax laws that they pass in most cases will benefit them also. The average American works hard and pays their fair share and all we want is a fair deal and a fair shot. The wealthy just want and dont care about the fairness of anything as long as they benefit.

I think that the key takeaway here is that the federal income tax laws are not fair and balanced. As noted in the documentary, "We Are Not Broke," the wealthy paid off the congressional members to enact tax laws that protected them so that they could retain much of their wealth and pay as little taxes as possible. When the banks failed and the housing market collapsed, these wealthy individuals, who also had quite a bit of their wealth offshore, were not affected as deeply as the rest of us. So I think it is fair to assume that Romney's tax returns would show that he took advantage of these laws because he has said himself that he paid all the taxes that he was required to pay and nothing more. Problem is that many Americans could not have done the same thing because the laws did not and still do not protect the rest of us in the same matter. I agree with the President that at this time with our economy still struggling to recover, the wealthy have an obligation to contribute a little more since they benefited more. It is unfortunate that some of the wealthiest Americans have a selfish attitude and refuse to aide the United States, the country that provided them their opportunities to gain great wealth in the first place.
