Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, on Monday said that Republicans and Democrats must come together to avert a government shutdown, which he added would be “disastrous” for the American people.
“Whatever the motives of the Republican leadership, one thing is clear: A government shutdown would be disastrous for the American people,” Sanders wrote in an editorial for the Washington Post.
Sanders added that Lawmakers must come together “in a bipartisan manner” to avert a shutdown.
“A shutdown would harm tens of millions of working-class families who would be unable to access vital services. It would disrupt the lives of hundreds of thousands of federal employees who would not receive the paychecks they expected,” the Vermont Senator Wrote.
“It would endanger members of the U.S. military who are putting their lives on the line defending our nation.”
The comments from Sanders come as Republicans have made President Trump’s border wall as a necessary part of the funding bill.
Sanders added that a deal regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which protects young immigrants from the threat of deportation, must be part of the legislation.
“The Republican Congress must act,” Sanders wrote. “A clean Dream Act must be signed into law as part of any budget agreement.”
