Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he brought up the issue of human rights abuses with Philipines President Rodrigo Duterte after President Trump did not bring up the issue in his meeting with the leader over the weekend.
Trudeau said he shared his concern about extrajudicial killings as well as other human rights abuses to Duterte.
“I also mentioned human rights, the rule of law and specifically extrajudicial killings as being an issue that Canada is concerned with,” Trudeau told reporters following a meeting with Duterte.
“The president was receptive to my comments and it was throughout a very cordial and positive exchange,” he added.
Duterte’s crackdown on drugs in his country has allegations of human rights abuses.
President Trump met with Duterte over the weekend during his first official visit to the Philipines.
The White House says Trump and Duterte “briefly” spoke about human rights issues, but Duterte’s spokesperson denied the subject was brought up.
