White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon on Tuesday spoke with American Prospect editor Robert Kuttner to talk about the white Nationalist groups that President Trump failed to fully condemn following a weekend of violence in Charlottesville, VA.
Bannon was discussing his “economic nationalism” policy program when asked how economic nationalist ties into the recent violence in Charlottesville.
Bannon criticized the white supremacist movement within the Conservative base.
“Ethno-nationalism—it’s losers. It’s a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, uh, help crush it more,” Bannon said in the interview. “These guys are a collection of clowns.”
Bannon added that the Democrats handling of race relations will only help the Republican Party.
“The Democrats, the longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em I want them to talk about racism every day,” Bannon continued. “If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.”
