Sen. Al Franken, D-MN, warned fellow progressives who want to see President Trump Impeached, pointing out Vice President Mike Pence would become president and not be favorable to Democrats.
“He’s ideological, I consider him a zealot,” Franken told the International Business Times. “And I think that in terms of a lot of domestic policy, certainly would be worse than Trump.”
Franken blamed Pence, who was in charge of Trump’s transition team, for some of the administration’s worst cabinet choices including Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt, and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
Franken did concede that Pence may be more acceptable on foreign policy than Trump.
“If you’re talking about how we handle North Korea or something like that, I’d probably be more comfortable with Pence ultimately making those decisions than Trump, because of Trump’s personality and character,” Franken said.
Franken said he is concerned about Trump’s behavior because it has been “so outside the norm,” and said impeachment could make his actions even worse.
“I don’t know what he will do if he looks like he’s going to be impeached and he wants to deflect,” Franken said. “I don’t know what he’s capable of, and that really does concern me.”
