Rep. Don Beyer, D-VA, say President Trump needs to expel the ambassador from Turkey over violence involving Turkish officials during a visit to Washington D.C. this week.
“President Trump should immediately expel the Turkish Ambassador to the United States,” he said in a statement released Friday.
“President [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan’s attacks on human rights and democratic institutions in Turkey are disgraceful, but condoning such attacks on American soil betrays our deepest values.”
Rep. Beer, who served as the ambassador to Lichtenstein and Switzerland, added that the violence on Tuesday violated diplomatic decorum.
“As someone who has represented my country abroad as an ambassador, I have a special appreciation for the vital role that envoys play and the expectations for honorable behavior that comes with this responsibility. These actions fall grievously short of that standard, and the US must take a stand.”
The issue stems from security for Turkish President Erdogan clashing with protesters after his visit to the White House.
