Clapper Says Trump’s Criticism of Intelligence Community Helps the Russians

President Trump’s frequent criticism of the U.S. Intelligence community’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, “helps the Russians,” former Director fo National Intelligence James Clapper said Monday as he testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Does it serve any purpose for high officials like the President to say, well it could have been somebody else?” Clapper was asked by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT.

“You could rationalize that it helps the Russians by obfuscating who was actually responsible,” Clapper responded, saying the evidence that Russia was behind hacks and a propaganda campaign to influence the election was “overwhelming.”

Trump has maintained for months that it was impossible to figure out who was behind the efforts to hack the Democratic National Committee and Democratic operatives’ emails.
