Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, and Patty Murray, D-WA, with the support of 20 fellow Democrats are introducing new legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15/hour and attribute it to inflation.
The Raise the Wage Act of 2017, which the Senators will introduce today, will raise the minimum wage for the first time in 10 years, raising the federal minimum to $9.25 immediately, and lift it to $15 by 20204. The legislation would also raise the minimum wage for tipped workers at the same time.
The bill faces virtually no chance in a Republican controlled congress. But the bill could be seen as a message to working class Americans that Democrats are there for them after losing the valuable voter base in the 2016 presidential election.
